Sofa Buying Essentials

Whether you call it a couch, soda, or divan, it’s one of the most important furniture investments you’ll make. It’s also one of the longest lasting investments for most people. Sofas generally last 7-15 years, so you want to make sure you’re picking a good one that you like AND will stand the test of time. The following tips will help you choose the highest quality sofa for your budget.

You want to look for something that is heavy and solid. Pick up a corner, shake it, and sit on it. If any of those feels wobbly, you want to skip it. Frames made of quality wood will make a difference in standing the test of time.

Sofa Cushions

There is a lot to consider here, depending on your family and your style. But, you want sturdy seat cushions made of dense polyurethane foam. As for the soda backs, some have pillows, and others do not have removable pillows. If you have children, really consider the number of back pillows, cushions, and decorative pillows are on the sofa. Because, you’ll be picking them up several times a day.

You’re looking for joints that are double doweled and where the corner blocks are glued and screwed. Staples may be included for extra support, but should not be the sole support for your corner blocks. Another consideration is whether the feet are attached as part of the frame: attached feet is a sign of better quality. (However, removable feet makes moving it through doorways easier, so if you’re planning on moving it around a lot, this may not be a negative.)

Design Choices

Once you have the basics taken care of, you’ll want to choose a functional and fashionable design. Keep in mind how many people you want to seat, whether you plan on napping on the sofa often, and what size is most comfortable for you. Also, keep in mind you’ll probably keep it for a decade or more, so choosing something that will work with a variety of styles and looks will keep you happy and fashionable for the years to come! Or, if you’re feeling bold, check out some futuristic looking couches. Either way, long lasting comfort and quality are key!
