What is a Hoarder House?
These houses come in variety. The Urban Dictionary defines hoarder as “a word that describes anyone that feels the need to find, collect, keep, pack ANY and EVERYTHING because they do not know how to throw things away.”
The truth is that people usually do not set out to become a hoarder, it just slowly happens over time. Sometimes a family member may die and the person deals with the grief by holding onto everything that reminds them of that person. This could be furniture, knick knacks, clothes, newspapers and more. Others just do not throw anything away. They may have gone through a traumatic time in their life when they went without. This makes them almost scared to rid of anything.
How Hoarder Houses Affect Family
Hoarder houses can be a big burden on family members. We have seen situations where elderly or disabled people have let things go so long that their grandchildren aren’t allowed to come over anymore. This can be heartbreaking for grandparents especially if they are so disabled that they just cannot physically move around anymore. Once a family member like this gets sick and ends up on home health or hospice, these living conditions are usually reported to the state. If the living condition doesn’t change, the state will likely remove the elderly disabled person from the home.
